The island of Mauritius is a paradise to behold: palm trees and fringing reefs almost completely line the coasts, with waterfalls and white sand beaches defining the rich, dynamic landscape of the small volcanic island. The island’s west side, the Black River District, is known for its exquisite dive spots where a plunge beneath the waves will acquaint you with creatures like octopuses, dolphins, rays and turtles. However, much like the rest of the world, Mauritius experiences threats from pollution (like phosphates that inhibit coral growth and pesticides that kill the animals) and the effects of a changing climate. The Hope Spot was created in an effort to unite the local marine conservation community around saving Mauritius' beautiful, healthy ecosystem for decades into the future.

To celebrate the existence of this Mission Blue's first Hope Spot in Mauritius we organize a big online underwater photo and video contest: The Black River District Hope Spot Underwater Photo and Video Competition.
This online competition is a yearly event starting on the 1st of January and ending on the 31th of December.

The winners of the "Cachalot d'Or 2022" awards will be announced on January 31st 2023.

We have an international jury at our disposal to judge the entries in following categories:
Best picture (send in 5 images)
